Easy Ways to Cut Energy Costs and Save Money

Posted on

During these cold winter months, energy costs can easily creep up, taking more of your home budget than planned. Thankfully, there are simple ways to combat this making your home more efficient and saving you money!

If you have a standard water heater in your garage or another unconditioned area, you can wrap it with insulation to help prevent heat loss. Be careful not to cover the thermostat on your electric water heater. If you have a natural gas water heater, be sure not to cover the thermostat, heater’s top, bottom or burner compartment. When in doubt consult a professional!

Fix all leaky faucets and fixtures before they rack up higher energy costs. A leaky faucet might not seem like a big deal but imagine tossing a few pennies down every drain in your house each day for a year! That could really add up over time. If you need help fixing leaks, contact our new plumbing division. Kirk Garvey, our plumbing service leader, will be happy to help with all your plumbing needs.

Window coverings are a commonly overlooked way to save energy. At night you can help your home maintain its temperature better by closing drapes and other window coverings. Although they can be rare, we do get a few sunny winter days here and allowing the sunshine to flood into your home will make a difference in your heating as well; not to mention saving on energy by not needing electric lights.

Finally, we always recommend checking your heating equipment to ensure it is running optimally. A Precision Tune-Up is a great way to confirm everything is in tip-top shape.
