Try These New Year’s Resolutions for Your HVAC System

Posted on

Like most New Year’s resolutions, HVAC resolutions will benefit you only if you’re faithful about keeping them. If you do, they will help you save money, improve your home’s comfort and prolong the life of your HVAC system. Although you’re bound to think of some of your own HVAC resolutions, here are a few to start you off.

Install or Use a Programmable Thermostat

If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, consider installing one. They are inexpensive and, when used correctly, they can help bring significant savings on your utility bills. Program the thermostat to lower energy usage during times when the family is sleeping or away from home.

Change Your Filter

Changing an HVAC filter is easy, inexpensive, and the single most important thing you can do to keep your HVAC system running right for many, many years. Yet, surprisingly, very few homeowners bother with this task more than a couple of times a year. If you use a low quality air filter, it should be changed monthly; you can change a good quality pleated filter every three months.

Schedule HVAC Maintenance

A regular maintenance checkup on your air conditioner in spring and your furnace in fall will pay off by alerting you to potential problems before they become expensive repairs. A checkup of your thermostat, sensors, and controls will ensure your system is running efficiently, so that you’re getting the most for your energy dollars.

Air Seal Your Home

You may not see them, but there are myriad places where your conditioned air is leaking out and unconditioned air is being drawn inside: around doors, windows and baseboards; through minute exterior cracks; through the attic hatch; through recessed lighting; through electric switches; and through holes around exterior pipes, cables, and wiring. Air seal your home and prevent heat loss in winter and cooling loss in summer with caulk, weatherstripping, and insulation to seal holes, and you’ll save on your energy bill.
