Learn When to Replace a Toilet

Toilets typically last a long time, and sometimes, it’s even worthwhile to repair them when things go wrong. But there comes a time when a toilet has seen better days and you’re better off replacing it. So how do you know when it’s time to replace a toilet?

Signs It’s Time to Replace the Toilet

Cracks — Cracks in the porcelain are generally a sign that it’s time to replace the toilet. Hairline cosmetic cracks on the outside of the bowl or tank may be repaired with plumbing epoxy. But if they enlarge or grow longer, or are located in the inside of the tank or bowl, you might be better off not risking leaking or a flood and replacing the toilet. Be sure if you decide to repair the toilet that you empty the tank or bowl first and dry the interior thoroughly before using a caulking gun to apply the epoxy.

Inefficiency — Older toilets use a lot more water than modern models, so if yours is more than 20 years old and showing wear, it may be time to update with a more efficient toilet. A toilet manufactured prior to 1980 should definitely be replaced, as these use 7 gallons or more per flush. Modern toilets, manufactured since 1994, are required to use no more than 1.6 gallons of water per flush. You’ll notice the difference on your water bill, particularly if you have a large household, by switching to a more efficient model.

General wear — If it seems you’re constantly repairing the parts of your toilet, such as handles, flappers, floats, valves, bolts, washers, gaskets and others, maybe it’s time for an update.

Appearance — A new, modern toilet will refresh your bathroom and add to the value of the home. If you have dated and worn-out bathroom fixtures, think about replacing them all at once.
