Have You Heard These Geothermal Myths? Don’t Fall for Them

Posted on

Because geothermal heat pump systems still aren’t very common, a number of geothermal myths exist about them, including some that are highly misleading. Geothermal is actually among most energy efficient ways to condition your home. These systems pair the components of geothermal energy with a heat pump to achieve significant comfort, durability and energy savings.

Myths to Debunk:

  • These systems aren’t eco-friendly. Nothing could be further from the truth. The geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) can use up to five times less electricity to heat and cool your home than other kinds of HVAC equipment. A standard air-source heat pump works by harvesting or depositing heat from/in the air. In the heating cycle, it harvests it from the outdoors, and in the cooling cycle, it removes heat from your home and releases it into the outdoor air.Geothermal systems use the completely renewable resources underground to harvest and deposit heat. Temperatures underground change very little throughout the year, increasing the system’s ability to maintain comfortable temperatures indoors. The underground loop field can last 50 years and the indoor components may reach 20-25 years.
  • You need a large yard. New installation technology makes it possible to install such a system even in small yards with a vertical loop field instead of a horizontal one.
  • These systems are noisy. This is one of the most prevalent geothermal myths. In fact, these are among the quietest HVAC systems available. There’s no yard noise since they don’t use outdoor condensers, and the indoor components run exceptionally quietly.
  • They’re not affordable. While geothermal heat pumps do cost more than other kinds of HVAC systems, it’s largely because of the cost of excavating the loop field. Currently, a generous federal tax credit exists through the end of December 2016 for qualifying residential geothermal systems. You can deduct the entire cost of a qualifying system for a 30 percent tax credit. Unlike some other tax credits, there’s no cap on the amount you deduct. It doesn’t take long to recover the investment because your energy bills will be a fraction of what they were with a standard heating system.
