Think You Need a Duct Cleaning? The 3 Telling Signs

Posted on

The ductwork in your home works silently to distribute conditioned air to all of the rooms in your house. Over time, those ducts can accumulate dust and a variety of debris, and this can not only negatively impact your indoor air quality but impede smooth airflow in your ducts.

If your forced-air system is properly filtering your indoor air, your ducts should be OK, but how do you know if they’re not? How do you determine if there is enough of a problem to have your ducts professionally cleaned?

  • First do a visual inspection. If you see excess moisture in and around your ductwork especially where it connects to the air handler and evaporator coil, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to discover mold. Next check the vents in each room. See if any dark black or brown spots are on the vent slats. Then remove the vent cover, and using a flashlight, check inside the actual duct channel. You may find additional mold growing there also.
  • How is your family’s overall health, especially members’ respiratory health? Is anyone suffering from sinus problems, asthma, nasal congestion and allergies that aren’t just seasonal? Dirty ductwork often is the prime culprit of these types of health concerns. If you can see dust and debris in and around the duct grilles, this may be cause of your family’s poor respiratory health.
  • If you see, hear or smell signs of insects or rodents in your ducts, it’s definitely time to schedule an appointment for duct cleaning. Spiders, roaches, rats and mice are all carriers of germs and disease, and you certainly don’t want to breath air that has been blown over these rodents and their waste.
