5 Simple Ways to Boost Your Indoor Air Quality

Posted on

When it comes to improving your indoor air quality in your Portland area home, less is usually more:

  • Less dirt on your floors means less dirt in the air. Keeping floors vacuumed and mopped reduces chemicals and allergens such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, lead and fire-retardants. Using door mats and leaving shoes at the door further stops the spread of dirt and pollutants through your home.
  • Stay on the lesser end of humidity. Ensure humidity levels stay in the 30-50 percent range, especially in the summer months. Dust mites and mold love humidity, so reducing it with the help of your A/C helps control allergies and improve indoor air quality. If you’re air conditioner’s not keeping up with humidity control, consider upgrading to a high-efficiency model or invest in a whole-house dehumidifier.
  • Go smoke-less. The thousands of chemicals in cigarette smoke can significantly reduce indoor air quality and put children and adults at greater risk of respiratory infections, asthma, cancer and heart disease.
  • Stay free of radon. Radon, a colorless, odorless, natural radioactive gas, increases lung cancer risk and is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. It can permeate your home through cracks and holes in your foundation. Any home could have potential radon issues. The federal EPA’s “Consumer’s Guide to Radon Reduction” offers ways to reduce radon levels in your home if you find they are too high.
  • Do away with synthetics. Synthetic fragrances in cleaning solutions, laundry products and air fresheners are hazardous to your health. They can emit chemicals, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and toxic or hazardous fumes. Purchase fragrance-free or naturally scented products and avoid aerosols. Use natural cleaners such as baking soda and vinegar scented with lemons or essential oils. Open windows to air pollutants out of your home. Add house plants such as ivy, ferns and aloe to your home, which help cleanse the air.
