Are You Prepared for a Winter Weather Emergency?

Harsh winter weather can take its toll on people, especially those living in areas with colder winter temperatures, such as Portland. Being prepared for a winter weather emergency is the best way to make sure you and your loved ones stay safe and warm during harsh storms. Here are a few tips so you’re prepared to face a winter weather emergency head on:

  • Make sure all of your major appliances and your heating systems work properly, and determine where you can shut them off in case of a power outage. This will protect them from being damaged in case of high-voltage jolts when your power comes back on. It is important to leave one light switch on so that you know when power is restored.
  • Stockpile important necessities. Make sure you have one flashlight per person in your home, and extra batteries. Also make sure you have plenty of matches, so you can light candles or your fireplace, if necessary, and have several gallons of clean water and a few days’ worth of non-perishable foods on hand. And if you suspect a power outage is coming, fill up a bathtub with water. You can use this water for flushing toilets during the outage.
  • Consider buying and using a backup, or standby, generator, which can provide power for you and your loved ones. You should keep up with routine maintenance to make sure the generators will work properly if needed. If it is a gas generator try to keep a few gallons of fresh gas in a shed or outer building.
  • Ensure that shelter for your outside pets or farm animals is warm and safe. Seal any leaks in barns, and make sure you have enough food and water stored for them to ride out a winter weather emergency.
