Saving Energy in Your Portland Home: High Tech Is Fine, but So Is Tried-And-True

Saving Energy in Your Portland Home: High Tech Is Fine, but So Is Tried-And-True

As energy costs continue to rise, people are continuing to look for ways to save energy. Saving energy is an important goal, but often homeowners assume that they need to invest in high-tech new gadgets to help them save. If you have the funds to do so, installing an energy-efficient new appliance or high-efficiency HVAC system is a great idea, but many tried-and-true solutions still work just as well. Consider these ideas:

  • Turn off the lights – Turn off lights that you don’t need. Simply teaching yourself and those in your house to pay attention and turn off lights will help you save substantially.
  • Lower the thermostat – Every degree that you lower the thermostat in the winter will save a couple of percent in energy use. You’ll likely feel little difference between 70 degrees and 67 degrees, but your energy use will be drastically different. Lowering the thermostat at night, and adding a few more blankets, will make a big difference as well.
  • Use storm windows – In the fall, put your storm windows black in place, or slide them closed if they’re always installed.
  • Shorten that shower – Shortening your shower not only saves water, but also heat energy. You can turn the water off or lower the flow while shampooing or soaping up. You’ll be saving energy as you do.
  • Have your HVAC unit inspected – The U.S. Department of Energy indicates that heating and cooling can make up half of your home’s energy use. Having your HVAC unit serviced each season will help eliminate problems, like dirty furnace filters, that could be costing you energy dollars.
