Is Your HVAC System Protected From Power Surges?

Posted on

Power surges are rarely on the minds of homeowners, even though the effects could be devastating, affecting your HVAC equipment along with other electrically powered home equipment. Most experts recommend a two-step form of surge protection to keep your HVAC system in good working condition and prevent damage to other systems.

External surges
Your home’s hard-wired equipment can become damaged when power surges occur due to forces outside your home, such as when your utility company works on power lines. When a power line goes down due to an accident or animal interference, it can also send a stronger surge of power into your home.

Internal surges
Equipment that is plugged into electrical outlets or hard-wired to your home’s power supply is also susceptible to power surges, due the factors described above, but it’s also prone to another kind of power surge. When powerful appliances in your home cycle on, like a refrigerator or air conditioner, that equipment draws more power from your home’s supply. And when it cycles off, that stronger power surge is sent back into the electricity lines, which can damage equipment over time, slowly eroding electrical components.

Two forms of protection

  1. Whole-house protection is necessary at the point where your power supply enters your home. You can use one device to minimize power surges to your hard-wired systems, including the HVAC system, telephone line and cable line, or you can use separate devices for each.
  2. Point-of-use protection is assured by using power surge strips that appliances, TVs and computers plug into, or by using surge protectors that are built in to electrical outlets.

There’s no way to completely protect your home from power surges, but various forms of surge protection can reduce damaging surges and extend the life of your equipment.
