How To Endure Severe Weather: 5 Tips For Preparing Your Home

Posted on

Although the weather in the Portland region is calm nearly all year long because of the sheltering we experience from the mountains, occasionally we do have to endure severe weather. Being prepared is your best insurance against the hardship the loss of utilities can cause for both you and your home.

Here are some tips for getting your home prepared:

  • Keep replacement batteries in one place for your flashlights and radios, along with a charger for your cell phone that runs off your vehicle’s battery.
  • Avoid hyperthermia in the summer by staying as cool as possible. When the air conditioning is off, take tepid showers to stay cool or place a wet washcloth around your neck. Drink plenty of water.
  • Hypothermia in the winter can be a serious problem, and adding layers of clothing will keep you warmer. If you have the space to store them, sleeping bags for each member of your family can help keep them warmer during the day or at night.
  • Whether it’s summer or winter, it’s a good idea to not open the refrigerator. Have shelf-ready food on hand that doesn’t require heating, like peanut butter, crackers, dried fruit, cereals and canned food (and don’t forget the can opener). If you want to cook food, do so outdoors with a barbecue. Never bring a gas- or briquette-burning barbecue indoors. These will build unhealthy levels of carbon monoxide in your home.
  • You can help your home endure severe weather by protecting it from electrical surges with a whole-house surge protector or a dedicated unit for your HVAC system. When the power comes back on, it may spike enough to burn out electronic components inside your equipment, rendering it inoperable.
  • A standby generator is a certain way to provide power to your home when the electricity goes out, as is a solar system that can provide power throughout the year and for emergencies.
