Whole-House Dehumidifers — Important in the Willamette Valley

Posted on

Willamette Valley rains can make humidity in your home a constant concern. Since opening windows doesn’t reduce your indoor humidity when it’s raining or humid outside, the only way to actually remove moisture from your home is to use a dehumidifier. Portable dehumidifiers work well in small spaces, but to remove humidity throughout your home you need a whole-house dehumidifier integrated into your HVAC system. These units take the wet air from each room in your home and return air with the right level of humidity.

It is crucial that you address excessive indoor humidity, as it can cause a host of problems. Musty smells and an unpleasant dampness all around can make you uncomfortable, but too much humidity can also cause wet spots on your walls, condensation on your windows, rotted wood and other structural problems for your home. It can also cause the growth of mold, dust mites and bacteria that can lead to allergies and asthma. What might seem like a minor nuisance can have real consequences for your home and for your family’s health.

The Environmental Protection Agency suggests that you maintain an indoor humidity level between 30 and 50 percent to control mold growth. Without a dehumidifier, indoor humidity levels can easily exceed 85 percent in the Willamette Valley, far beyond the Environmental Protection Agency’s acceptable range.

A whole house dehumidifier is the most efficient and effective way to control the humidity level throughout your home. To do the same with portable dehumidifiers, you would need a portable unit in almost every room, which would be noisy and would use far more electricity than a whole-house unit. A whole house dehumidifier is the easiest way to help keep your family comfortable and preserve the structural integrity of your home. Most importantly, a whole-house system will help your family avoid the allergies and asthma that can result from excessive humidity.
