Use These 3 A/C Troubleshooting Tips Before Calling a Pro

Posted on

Maintenance of your HVAC equipment should always be carried out by an experienced technician or contractor. There are various things that can go wrong with heating and cooling systems and fixing the problems can sometimes be quite complicated. There are some things you should always check before calling a technician. These handy A/C troubleshooting tips should help you know what to look for.

One of the most common reasons HVAC systems have problems is that they are not cleaned often enough. Before you contact a professional it is important to check whether enough air is coming out of your ducts.

  • Check for blockages, leaks and loose connections in your duct system.
  • Check that your filter and air blower are not full of dirt or debris.
  • Check for ice buildup on your air handler and evaporator coils.

You might find in wet climate conditions that your A/C is not acting effectively to rid your home of humidity. There are a number of reasons you might be experiencing this issue.  Check these areas of your system before spending any unnecessary cash.

  • Check your temperature controls to be sure that the temperature in your home is dropping.
  • Check ductwork and ensure that your air handler is receiving enough air from return air registers.
  • Open doors or install louvered grilles into doors and walls where there are blockages to return air registers.

Electrical equipment should always be checked as it can easily become worn with frequent usage. Do not try to repair wires or electrical components yourself, always call a trustworthy professional to deal with these problems.

  • Always first check that the A/C is on and make sure that the temperature is always set below room temperature.
  • Make sure that electrical power is being supplied to both the outdoor condenser/compressor system and indoor blower fan/evaporator coil.
  • Check to see if your wiring is damaged.
  • Check that power switches are all “on” and fuses are in good condition.
  • Check that thermostat is set correctly.
