A vehicle that rattles, pings, and makes unusual noises obviously needs service, or it won’t be on the road very much longer. A noisy furnace is doing the same. Your furnace is a complex machine that should be respected for operation and safety. When you hear squealing, scraping and other noises, it’s not a good sign. Call a heating and cooling pro right away.
Signs Of Trouble
Your noisy furnace is a sign of trouble. Loose or worn belts produce an annoying squealing sound. It needs to be tightened or replaced. You’ll also hear this sound in older systems if the shaft bearings need oil. A scraping sound may indicate bearing wear inside the motor. Turn off your system if you hear this to prevent failure. Furnaces sometimes produce a low-pitch rumbling noise. With the burners on, it indicates dirty gas burners. With the burners off, the pilot light may need adjusting. Vibration from your furnace may mean the blower motor needs balancing.
Finding A Contractor
When searching for a contractor, start by asking family, friends and co-workers. They may provide useful referrals to get you started. Choose a company that has been in business for a long time, has an excellent reputation and employs technicians certified by NATE (North American Technician Excellence). Confirm that the contractor’s licenses and insurances are up to date and check at least three references.

The contractor you choose should have annual service plans that offer you the following:

- Discounts on parts and labor.
- Scheduled service calls to keep your systems at peak efficiency, and to help prevent system failures and emergencies.
