You may have wanted to replace your HVAC system for some time but are unsure about when to do it. The experts at Lennox suggest replacing HVAC systems “when the cost of repairs approaches 50% of the value of your heating or cooling system.”
Lennox cites other reasons to replace your HVAC system, including if it is more than 12 years old or if you’ve had a myriad of other problems with it. If you decide it’s time to replace your system, there are a few things to keep in mind while doing it.
1. HVAC systems are made up of two basic components — an outdoor unit, which is an air conditioner or heat pump, and an indoor unit, which is a gas furnace or evaporating coil. To improve air quality, you may opt to include a humidifier or a high-efficiency air cleaner to your system.
2. Keep your eye out for energy tax credits. Many environmentally-friendly home improvements count as a tax credit, and you could save up to 30% on a new high-efficiency HVAC system from government rebates or tax deductions.
3. Think long term. The cost of the new system isn’t the only cost you need to take into consideration. A new high-efficiency system can save you a bundle on energy costs, so keep this in mind as you consider prices. Replace your HVAC system on your own terms; don’t wait until it breaks down, leaving you in a hurry to make a rash decision.
