Features You Want In A Programmable Thermostat

Posted on

Programmable thermostats provide homeowners with a great way to improve energy efficiency, which slashes the cost of monthly utility bills. Programmable thermostats work exceptionally well for people who are away from their home for a set period of time during the week. Having one of these thermostats to regulate your heating and cooling equipment will allow you to preset the temperature of your home and have your system run only when you need it.

When choosing programmable thermostats, you should consider how much time you spend at home in your weekly schedule. There are three different models that you can choose from:

7-Day Model

7-day models are the best option for homeowners who have varying schedules throughout the week. For instance, if you have children, and they get home from school earlier on Wednesdays, a 7-day model will enable you to set the specific time for your heating/cooling system to kick in. That way, your children will get home to a comfortable environment. With a 7-day model, you can set the time you want your heating and cooling equipment to turn on each day of the week.

5+2-Day Model

A 5+2-day model is excellent if your schedule is the same each day of the week and you have a different schedule for the weekends. So, for example, if you get home from work at five every day during the week, you can preset your thermostat to start running each day just before you return. On the weekends, you can set a different schedule that will be the same for both two days.

5-1-1 Model

5-1-1 models are the same as a 5+2-day model, except that 5-1-1 models allow you to have a separate schedule for each weekend day.

Some other excellent features that can be found on programmable thermostats, are:

  • Touch-pad screen programming
  • Voice/phone programming
  • Vacation settings
  • Dirty air filter alerts
  • Equipment malfunction alerts

When programmable thermostats are used correctly, they can pay for themselves within four years. If you are having a tough time determining what thermostat would work best in your home, contact the experts at Roth Home for further assistance.
