July Or January, A Zoning System Keeps Your Home Energy Efficient

Zoning systems not only give you greater control over the comfort in your house but they also help you become more energy efficient.  Any time of the year, they can help you lower your utility bills without sacrificing comfort.

Houses without zoning systems use a single thermostat to control the temperature of the entire house.  Zoning allows you to use different thermostats that control different areas of your house.  This gives you much more control over how you utilize your HVAC system, similar to how light switches give you control over your lighting in separate rooms.

Zoning systems eliminate the problems of the “battle of the thermostat.”  Since occupants in the house do not need to agree on a single ideal temperature for the house, different people can set it to the temperature they want.  This won’t disrupt anyone in other zones of the house.

Trying to create one consistent temperature through an entire house is already a fairly unrealistic goal, due to a variety of factors.  For one, the fact that heat naturally rises tends to make upper stories warmer.  Large windows or glass expanses also allow for more heat transfer in and out of the house, making those areas warmer or cooler than the rest of the house.

Zoning eliminates such concerns and helps you save energy.  If there is a zone that is frequently unoccupied, you can put it on an energy-saving setting that allows you to reduce energy waste.

An HVAC contractor can help you determine what zoning strategy is right for you, based on how your house is situated and what rooms you use the most often.  The actual installation is simple.  It typically requires no more than a control panel, dampers, thermostats and some ductwork modifications.
