Whole-House Energy Savings Suggestions

Many Portland area homeowners have become energy savings crusaders, looking to use fewer resources, decrease their impact on the environment and save money. If this sounds like you, Roth Heating & Cooling, Plumbing, Electrical, Drain Services and Energy Star have some suggestions that can help you get even more energy savings throughout your whole house.

–       Seal in energy savings by sealing up air leaks. Conditioned air can seep out of leaks in your house, which are usually located at the junction of two different materials, such window frames, doorframes and vents. You can seal these up with caulk, weather stripping or spray foam.

–       Make sure your ducts are clean, sealed and insulated. The typical Portland home loses about 20 percent of energy due to duct problems such as leaks, disjointed connections, accumulated dust and dirt, inadequate insulation, or faulty design and installation. If there are areas of your ducts that are visible, such as in your attic or crawlspace, you can seal them with duct mastic (not duct tape). However, most ducts are concealed behind walls, so it’s a good idea to call a professional.

–       Increase your insulation. Energy may be seeping right through your ceiling if your home is like many built earlier than 1980, which have inadequate insulation. Energy Star suggests R-38 insulation for your attic, but how much insulation each home needs varies according to a number of factors, so having it evaluated before making adjustments is a good idea.

–       Switch to high-efficiency lights. High efficiency lights can use up to 75 percent less energy than standard bulbs, and typically have increased lifespans. Start with the lights you use most often, which in most homes are in the kitchen ceiling, bathroom, living room and porch.

–       Think about upgrading to high-efficiency equipment. High efficiency units such as air conditioners and water heaters can dramatically increase your energy savings, while reducing your impact on the environment.
