Six Energy Saving Tips For Homeowners

Posted on

There are many ways that homeowners can save money on their energy bills.  The following tips will illustrate how a few simple changes can make a big difference to your home comfort and your budget.

Tip #1: The easiest way to quick energy savings is having a programmable thermostat installed in your home. It just does not make sense to heat or cool an empty home, and with a programmable thermostat you can raise and lower the temperature in your house automatically when you are not there. You can also set the thermostat to cycle off at night when you are asleep. The less your heating and air conditioning system has to run, the lower your utility bills.

Tip #2: Seal up your home against drafts. If your home is leaking air, your furnace is going to have to work harder to keep it warm. Check areas around doors and windows to figure out where the cold air is coming in and install weather stripping or use foam insulation to close it up. If you can feel cool air coming in through exterior walls, you may need more insulation.

Tip #3: Add insulation. The attic is another area where more insulation is often necessary. There is an excellent tax credit available right now if you put in more insulation.

Tip #4: Upgrade your appliances. If it has been several years since you purchased a refrigerator or stove, you can achieve significant energy savings from a newer more efficient model. New hot water heaters and furnaces are also much more energy efficient than the older counterparts.

Tip #5: Look for HVAC equipment with high SEER ratings because those are the most energy-efficient, and will therefore deliver the greatest energy savings.

Tip #6: Have your HVAC equipment serviced before the start of the winter heating season and the summer cooling season. A precision tune-up will make sure that your system is operating as efficiently as possible and will also ensure that there are no leaks in the system or dangerous emissions threatening your family. Roth Home has been performing precision tune-ups for Portland area residents since 1976.
