Make Sure You Change the A/C Filter Regularly. But How Often?

Home maintenance is an important part of home ownership, one you may not know the ins and outs of yet. Keeping your heating and cooling systems in tip top shape will help keep the air in your home clean and will help the mechanisms run smoothly, in turn lowering utility bills. Regular changing of the A/C furnace is a crucial step to maintaining these systems, but knowing when to change them can be tricky for some.

The air filter is an essential part of your home’s heating and cooling system. It works by trapping particles of dust and other substances in the air, stopping them from clogging up the heating and cooling coils of the machine. When the filter gets too dirty it fails to function properly, letting in these particles and causing a range of problems with the system.

So – how do you know when to change the A/C filter? Typically these need to be replaced every 1-3 months, though this can vary some. A good guideline is to check the filter monthly. Once your filter has done its job and is ready to be replaced with a fresh one, the filter currently installed will look dirty or full of dust and grime.

If the filter appears clean even after months of use, chances are it isn’t doing its’ job. There are several things that could be going on here:

  • The filter could be the wrong size for the furnace.
  • The filter could be installed in an upside-down position.
  • The filter could be a low-end model that isn’t designed to clean the air.
  • There may be a problem with the system that needs to be evaluated by a professional.

If you chose not to change the A/C filter for long periods of time, like an entire summer, you run the risk of damaging your heating and cooling system and shortening its’ life cycle.
